Welcome to Project Jellypool, our citizen science project to monitor jellyfish species and numbers on Ardmair Beach on the NW Coast of Scotland over the summer of 2024.
Project Jellypool has seen a group of local residents meeting on Ardmair Beach every fortnight from May through to the end of October 2024 to map jellyfish numbers and species washed up along one section of the beach alongside weather, tide and other conditions.
We were motivated by our love of our beaches and open water swimming and wanting to know about these creatures who tend to thwart our plans in the summer months. But we also just wanted to understand more about these creatures and what brings them to our shores: weather, tide, climate correlations. Our 2024 study is a starting point and we invite groups in other parts of Scotland to join the quest to find out more. Our 2024 project report is freely available and we would be happy to share our methods and top tips!. Just send a message via our Get Involved page.
Thank you to our team of citizen scientists for co-ordinating over the summer to ensure we were able to get regular records. It was fun if squirmy at times. And thank you to Dr Simon Greenstreet for ensuring we used a robust methodology and for preparing our project report.
