Ulluminate Community Interest Company was founded in 2023 by seven residents of Ullapool and Lochbroom. We are an asset-locked, not-for-profit company with a share of profits going back into the community. Between us we have a wide range of interests and skills including science journalism, communication and research, crofting, event management, traditional music composition and performance, philosophy and art.

The idea for a festival came, as all good ideas do, over a meal and a blether about this incredible area we live in and just how many people we know in the community who are working actively, often in their own time, on scientific research and conservation and creating literature, art, craft and music very often linked to the physical landscape, its flora and fauna.

We realised it made no sense to explore science without the arts and that seeing the science in art only deepens its wonder. We also understand that lived experience and cultural wisdom are as valid a way to look at our world as through the microscope or scientific data.
